An avid metal-caster since the mid-1990s, Karl has mastered a technique which allows him to cast next to anything and yet capture the finest detail in his poured work without the use of any burn-out method. Some of his castings are stand-alone works of art, while others become the macro foundation for his vignettes or the micro elements of larger sculptures.

In addition to casting for his own art, Karl founded and directs the Standard Issue Iron Pour and Metalcasting Workshop in Southeastern Minnesota, which has been running since 2006. This event, which Karl casts in a rural setting, allows sculptors a two-week retreat for unadulterated mold making and iron casting.
